Fort McCoy is home to the 84th Training Command, the 88th Regional Support Command and Wisconsin National Guard Military Academy and is situated on over 60,000 acres in the Coulee Region of Wisconsin off Hwy 21.

History
Fort McCoy is named for Major General Robert Bruce McCoy, a distinguished veteran of World War I. The son of a Civil War captain, McCoy was a prominent local resident who served as a lawyer, district attorney, county judge and mayor of Sparta, Wisconsin. Camp McCoy was founded in 1909. It served as a supply base for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the great Depression. It served as a POW and relocation camp during WWII. It housed 15,000 Cuban refugees in 1980. It has been a major mobilization site during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and for the global war on terrorism.
Mission
Fort McCoy’s primary mission is to support the readiness of the force by serving as a training center and support site for force generation missions. As a Total Force Training Center, Fort McCoy’s primary responsibility is providing quality training facilities for reserve and active-component military forces.
Population Served
The Fort McCoy population consists of 1,300 military and 2,800 civilians working on the installation with an average daily student population of 3,900 military and 200 civilians. There are 800 military dependents and a retiree population of 143,000 served by Fort McCoy.
Base Transportation
Fort McCoy provides an on post taxi service for official business. The post taxi can be reached at 608-388-3616.
The nearest commercial airport to Fort McCoy is La Crosse Municipal Airport, located 35 miles west of the installation in La Crosse WI. A courtesy phone to arrange pickup for individuals traveling on official orders is located in the airport lobby. Rental cars are available at the airport. Other commercial airports in the region include Madison WI or Rochester MN, 110 miles; Minneapolis/St Paul MN, 180 miles; Milwaukee WI 185 miles; and Chicago O’Hare in IL, 240 miles. The TMP does not provide transportation to or from these airports.
Sponsorship
Upon receipt of orders, either call your new unit or personnel office to request a sponsor or send a completed DA Form 5434. Army Community Service will provide a welcome packet CD for your sponsor to mail or mail one to you upon sponsor request.
General Delivery mail can be set up by calling 608-388-3205, DSN 312-280-3205. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
Temporary Quarters
The Lodging Office, located at 51 South O Street (Anderson Hall), is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may also make reservations in advance by calling 608-388-2107/3646, DSN 312-280-2107/3646. Pets are not allowed in temporary quarters other than designated PCS family quarters. Kennels are available in the local communities.
Relocation Assistance
Relocation Readiness is designed to make your transition into our community an easier, more pleasant experience. Please stop by Army Community Service to in-process and take advantage of the many services that are available. Our lending closet provides essential items while you are awaiting the arrival of your household goods. There is an Installation Newcomer Orientation generally held the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Critical Installation Information
- Wisconsin has four distinct seasons, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and other items if arriving during the winter months: Winter jacket, snow boots, gloves or mittens, winter hats, snow brush and ice scraper.
- Purchasing quality three to four bedroom homes may average $175,000. Apartment & housing monthly rentals range from $400 for studio/efficiencies to $1500 for duplex/townhouse/house depending on size and condition. Please be aware that for most rental units, utilities are not included.
- Vehicle operators on a DOD installation and operators of government owned vehicles shall not use cell phones unless the vehicle is safely parked or unless they are using a hands-free device. The wearing of any other portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices (except for hand-free cellular phones) while operating a motor vehicle is prohibited.
- The Fort McCoy Child Supervision Policy requires that children age 9 and under not be left to care for themselves on the installation or in military housing at any time. Various supervisory requirements for children ages 10 and older are also addressed within this policy. Copies of the policy are available through Army Community Service and School Age Services.
- The WI Child Passenger Safety.
- Wisconsin has what is known as a primary enforcement seat belt law. A standard or primary enforcement seat belt law allows police to stop and ticket a driver for not wearing a seat belt, just like any other routine traffic violation.
