History
In 1906, Santa Fe Railway engineers were ordered to locate a town site in the newly developing ranch and farm area of Eastern New Mexico for a terminal. Clovis was incorporated in May 1909. In the mid 1920’s, Portair Field was established on Cannon’s site. It was a civilian passenger terminal for early commercial transcontinental flights. In 1942, Clovis Army Air Base was the first military unit to use the facility as an Army glider detachment. In 1943, heavy bombers arrived and it was renamed Clovis Army Air Field and in 1947, the installation was inactivated. In July 1951, the base became the responsibility of Tactical Air Command and was home to the P-51 Mustang. In November 1951, the base officially became Clovis Air Force Base. On June 8, 1957, the base was renamed Cannon Air Force Base in honor of the late General John K. Cannon, a former commander of the Tactical Air Command.
Mission
Home of the 27th Special Operations Wing (27th SOW), Cannon Air Force Base is named after General John Kenneth Cannon, a World War II Mediterranean combat commander and former chief of U. S. Air Forces in Europe. The missions of the wing include infiltration, exfiltration and re-supply of special operations forces; air refueling of special operations rotary wing and tiltrotor aircraft; and precision fire support. These capabilities support a variety of special operations missions including direct action, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, personnel recovery, psychological operations and information operations.
Population Served
Cannon’s population is approximately: 4,484 active duty service members, 5625 family members, 657 (GS- 437/NAF – 220) civilians, and 3,500 retirees.
The Clovis population is approximately 37,775.
Base Transportation
Currently, there is no base transportation on this installation.

Relocation Assistance
The goal of the Relocation Assistance Program is to provide our military and DOD Civilian community with knowledge and skills to accomplish a successful smooth move and provide individual services such as personal consultations, base videos, a PCS Checklist and 20 hours of free childcare provided by the Air Force Aid Society. Commando Newcomer’s Orientation is a mandatory program for all newly assigned personnel to familiarize themselves with their new base and receive a mission briefing from the Wing Commander. Spouse Orientation is held the third Tuesday of every month. Relocation is located in Building 600, Suite 2036A and can be reached at 575-784-4228 or 575-784-4195 or DSN 312-681-4228/4195.
Critical Installation Information
New Mexico law does not require the use of safety helmets by motorcycle operators. However, DoD Instruction 6055.4 mandates the use of helmets by military members on or off base. In addition, the wearing of highly contrast/reflective vests is also mandatory for all operators on base and all military personnel off base.
Passports and Visas
Ensure member and/or dependents have the required passports and/or visa prior to final out-processing. Member and/or dependents are not allowed to final out-process without the required passports/visas in hand for themselves (if applicable) and/or dependents. Members electing the accompanied tour will not be permitted to out-process without having the required passports/visas in hand for themselves (if applicable) and/or dependents.
These actions are necessary to prevent unforeseen hardships to the military members and their families. Therefore, as a last reiteration, it is essential, members do not out-process without having the appropriate passports/visas for themselves (if applicable) and/or dependents.
