Location
The Weapons Station is located at the northern end of what is known as the Virginia Peninsula, bordered by the York River, Colonial National Historic Park, York County, City of Newport News and James City County. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown is one of the Navy’s major East Coast ordnance facilities. Yorktown is considered to be a military town with the cost of living being slightly higher than average.
History
The installation was first established in 1918, as the Naval Mine Depot. The Weapons Station is one of many Navy installations in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
Mission
The mission of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown is to provide responsive, quality support for ordnance logistics, technical, and related services to U.S. operating forces in support of national military strategy.
Population Served
Military bases in close proximity to the Weapons station are Naval Station Norfolk, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Naval Air Station Oceana, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Together, they support approximately 85,000 joint force military personnel with an additional 120,000 family members, over 68,000 retirees and 27,439 DoD personnel and civilian employees. Also, in close proximity to the Weapons Station are the Army’s Fort Eustis and Fort Monroe, the Air Force’s Langley AFB and the Coast Guard Training Center at Yorktown.
Base Transportation
Currently; there is no base transportation on this installation.
Sponsorship
Sponsors are identified and assigned as soon as the receiving command is notified of a prospective gain in personnel. The sponsor then sends the inbound service member a letter with an address and phone number, as well as useful information about the Weapons Station. The service members will then utilize the Command’s address in order to forward personal mail to his/her new command while in transit. If you do not hear from your sponsor and your transfer date is approaching, please contact the Command Sponsor Coordinator at 757-887-4798 or DSN 312-953-4798.
Military personnel attached to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Tenant commands are to report directly to their command upon arrival. If you arrive on a weekend, report to Combined Bachelor Quarters, Nelson House, Building 704 (located inside Gate 3), then to the command on the next working day. Yorktown Administrative Office can be reached at 757-887-4355, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to answer questions regarding check-in procedures. After hours, the Command Duty Officer can be reached by cell phone at 757-268-6250, or for the assistant Command Duty Officer call 757-268-6407.
Temporary Quarters
BEQ/BOQ Lodging is available at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex. For reservations and rates call Yorktown BEQ/BOQ at 757-887-7621 and Cheatham Annex BEQ/BOQ at 757-887-7712. Accommodations may also be found (on a space available basis) at Fort Eustis lodging, which is approximately 7 miles from Naval Weapons Station. Call Ft. Eustis for rates and reservations at 757-878-2337. The closest Navy Lodge is at Norfolk, approximately thirty five (35) miles South East. The phone number for the Navy Lodge is 757-489-2656 or 1-800-NAVY-INN. Langley Air Force Base, approximately twelve (12) miles from Naval Weapons Station, also has transient lodging and may be reached at 757-764-4667. Service members requesting a room at the Navy Lodge under PCS orders will have priority over other requests. Pets are not allowed in the VQ. Navy Lodge has limited rooms available for pets, so call in advance to check on availability; some of the hotels and motels do not accept pets.
Relocation Assistance
The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown is located off of Von Steuben Drive next door to the base Housing Office and may be reached by phone at 757-887-4606. Temporary household goods items are available at the FFSC Yorktown lending locker/loan closet. Military I.D. card and orders are required for this no-cost service.

Cell Phones/Texting
Effective July 1, 2009, “TWD” (Texting While Driving) Now Outlawed In Virginia: Text messaging while driving is banned in the State of Virginia. The law prohibits drivers from using wireless communication devices to send text messages, except in cases of emergency. A violation of the new law is a traffic infraction punishable by a $20 fine for a first offense, and a $50 fine for a second or subsequent offense.
Cell phones are prohibited from use while driving on the installation; this includes hands free devices.
