Location
Naval Support Activity Naples Department (NSAND) Gaeta, is located in the town of Gaeta, Italy. Halfway between Rome and Naples, the town of Gaeta is a tourist summer resort town with beautiful beaches and historic treasures. Due to joint basing more detailed information on NSAND Gaeta can be located on NSA Naples.
History
Since leaving Ville Franche, France in 1967, the U.S. Sixth Fleet flagship has resided in Gaeta, Italy. On 10 February 2006, the Gaeta Installation reverted to a Detachment and soon after to a Department of NSA Naples after being an independent Command for several years. Although officially the command no longer exists, its main mission as homeport of the 6th Fleet flagship USS Mount Whitney continues unchanged.
Mission
Provide reliable and flexible force protection, administrative and logistical support to the Sixth Fleet Flagship USS Mount Whitney and their families, various smaller commands throughout the Lazio province, and visiting USS/USNS/NATO ships at a remote overseas location.
Population Served
The population served is comprised of active duty personnel and their families, DoD personnel and US contractors from the Commands present in Gaeta (NSAND Gaeta, USS Mount Whitney), and various smaller commands throughout the Lazio region.

Currently, there is no base transportation on this installation.
Sponsorship
Correspondence with your Sponsor — The most important way to prepare for this assignment is to correspond with your sponsor. Contact with your sponsor will enable you to have a trouble free move and an easier adjustment to your new environment. Once you know that you’re coming to Gaeta, there is no time to waste in getting ready to move. A move overseas requires months of preparation. It cannot be overemphasized that you should immediately contact your sponsor. Constant two-way communication between you and your sponsor will help avoid needless worries and frustrations. If you have not received a letter from your sponsor, write immediately to your reporting command (addresses below), giving the following information:
- Your name and reporting date.
- Names, ages, sexes and relationship of accompanying dependents.
- Mailing addresses for all periods prior to arrival here.
- Telephone, DSN number, and e-mail where you can be reached.
- Any other helpful information about yourself. Hotel needs (family size, ages of children, number of beds, cribs, and any special considerations).
- Pets you may be bringing.
- Ask any questions you may have.

Upon your arrival at NSAND Gaeta, a Command Sponsor will meet you at the airport and take care of you. If you have orders to the USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20) you must contact one of the following: from inside the U.S. call 757-443-7200 or DSN 314-646-7200, or from within Europe call 011-39-081-568-9000.
Newcomers to NSAND Gaeta will attend a Command newcomer briefing. Following the briefing, participants also attend an Area Orientation Class, Intercultural Seminar and a day trip to Naples. Temporary Quarters
Normally TLA Hotels are reserved by your sponsor before your arrival in Gaeta. However, it is best to touch base with your sponsor well in advance. If you have pets make sure your sponsor reserves a TLA HOTEL that allows pets.

Housing Welcome Center provides showing service, lease negotiation services, utilities connections and support, landlord/tenant mediations and translation services. Arrival TLA authorized for 60 days during housing search. Average time spent in TLA is 30 days.
E1 through E9 with command sponsored dependents are eligible for government quarters. E1 to E4 with command sponsored dependents are mandatorily assigned to government quarters when they are available within 30 days of arrival. One dog and/or one cat allowed in enlisted quarters. Refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer, transformers, wardrobes, microwave, freezer, kitchen cabinet and fans provided for full tour for bachelors and families. Loaner furniture available while awaiting household goods on arrival and departure. Encourage shipment of area rugs as all floors are tile/marble. Voltage can be stepped down to 110 volts but motors must be 50hz to work properly. Small NEXmart located in Gaeta. Main Navy Exchange, Commissary and Hospital are located one hour away in Naples. Time difference with east coast conus is 6 hours.
NOTE: HOUSING IS CRITICAL IN THE SUMMER TIME AS GAETA IS A RESORT COMMUNITY. IF YOU ARE ARRIVING IN JULY OR AUGUST ANTICIPATE AN EXTENDED PERIOD IN TLA WHILE SEARCHING FOR SUITABLE HOUSING IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. IF YOU ARE BRINGING DEPENDENTS CONCURRENTLY YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER DELAYING ARRIVAL UNTIL SEPTEMBER. PLEASE WORK CLOSELY WITH YOUR SPONSOR CONCERNING ARRIVAL, AND ENSURE ARRANGEMENTS ARE MADE FOR TLA PRIOR TO DEPARTING THE U.S.

Relocation Assistance
Newcomers to Gaeta will attend an Area Orientation/Intercultural Seminar to include 2 separate field trips to Rome and Naples (5 days total). This Seminar will help ease the transition of newcomers into Italy and to introduce them to the Italian language, customs, traditions and information about culture shock. Newcomers also participate in transportation oriented field trips learning to use local bus/train transportation system. Cultural Awareness classes include Italian Language, Cooking Class, Specialty Field Trips to exciting places such as an Olive Oil Factory visit, and much more.
The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) has loan closet kits available providing household items to newly reporting and detaching personnel through the temporary loan of household goods until personal HHGs shipment arrives. Major items carried are: pots and pans; cooking and eating utensils; and some small electrical appliances. The Housing Welcome Center has loaner furniture (i.e. beds, dresser drawers, night tables, microwaves, etc.) which also can be checked out for a certain period of time until you receive your personal HHGs.

Critical Installation Information
Gaeta has completed a major transformation in recent times. Some adjustments are still in the process and changes may occur. Please contact your sponsor for the most up to date information.
There is no government housing available in Gaeta and housing availability is limited from June through October.
NSAND Gaeta does not have a Child Development Center; however, Italian Child care is available on the economy.
There is no DODD schooling in Gaeta.
Dependents are required to check in with NSAND Gaeta Admin Office within eight days of arrival in order to submit a sojourner permit Application.
The closest U.S. Medical facility is in Naples. The U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) is located at the Naval Support Activity Gricignano on the Support Site. It is encouraged that persons coming to Gaeta bring a minimum of 3 months of maintenance medication and have a full complement of refills on those medications. Dental Care is provided at Naval Hospital Naples.
Gaeta has a small Navy Exchange minimart stocked to meet most bachelor sailor needs.
The support Site in Naples is approximately 50 miles from Gaeta’s Fleet Landing where USS Mount Whitney is homeported. In the summer, the commute to the Support Site can be extremely challenging due to Naples traffic congestion and different driving habits. The commute can then surpass two hours each way.
